How to Memorize Surah Kahf

Surah Al-Kahf has 110 verses built around four stories. Memorizing it story by story makes a long surah manageable. A step-by-step plan.
Surah Al-Kahf (The Cave) is the 18th surah of the Quran. It has 110 verses and spans the end of Juz 15 and the start of Juz 16. Many Muslims recite it every Friday, and many set the goal of memorizing it. Its length can feel like a lot, but the surah is organised around four stories, which gives you a natural structure for memorizing.
Why memorize Surah Al-Kahf
The Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever memorizes ten verses from the beginning of Surah Al-Kahf will be protected from the Dajjal" (Sahih Muslim 809). Reciting the surah on Friday is also reported in narrations collected by al-Hakim and al-Bayhaqi, which a number of scholars graded authentic. Starting with the first ten verses is therefore a good first goal in itself.
The structure of the surah
- Verses 1–8: introduction – praise of Allah who sent down the Book, and a warning and good news.
- Verses 9–26: the People of the Cave (Ashab al-Kahf), the young believers who took refuge in a cave.
- Verses 27–31: recite what has been revealed, patience with those who call on their Lord, and the reward of the believers.
- Verses 32–44: the owner of the two gardens and his companion – a story about wealth and gratitude.
- Verses 45–59: the parable of worldly life, the Day of Judgement and the story of Iblis.
- Verses 60–82: Musa (Moses) and the servant of Allah given special knowledge – a story about knowledge and patience.
- Verses 83–98: Dhul-Qarnayn, the just ruler who built the barrier against Ya'juj and Ma'juj.
- Verses 99–110: closing – the Day of Judgement, those whose deeds are lost, and the final verse on sincere worship.

A step-by-step plan
Step 1: the first ten verses (1–2 weeks)
Learn verses 1–10 first, one or two verses a day. Recite them every Friday from then on.
Step 2: complete the People of the Cave (2–3 weeks)
Continue to verse 26. The story is easy to follow, which helps memory.
Step 3: verses 27–44 (3 weeks)
The reminder passage and the story of the two gardens.
Step 4: verses 45–59 (2–3 weeks)
Shorter verses about worldly life and the Hereafter. Watch for verses with similar openings.
Step 5: Musa and the servant of Allah (3–4 weeks)
Verses 60–82 have a repeating pattern: a journey, an event, an objection, and a reply. Use that pattern to remember the order.
Step 6: Dhul-Qarnayn and the close (3–4 weeks)
Verses 83–110. The three journeys of Dhul-Qarnayn (west, east, then between two mountains) give the passage a clear order.
At three to five verses a day, five days a week, most adults complete the surah in three to five months. Children may take longer; it is better to go slowly and keep it.
Daily routine
- Listen to the day's verses several times from one reciter.
- Read them from the mushaf five to ten times.
- Recite them from memory, verse by verse, then together.
- Recite the previous day's verses, then join old and new.
- Once a week, recite everything you have memorized so far.
Watch for similar verses (mutashabihat)
The Musa section repeats phrases with small differences. For example, the servant of Allah says "did I not say that you would not be able to have patience with me?" in verse 72, and adds one word, "laka" (to you), when he repeats it in verse 75. Mark these differences in pencil in your mushaf and test yourself on them.
Use Friday as revision day
Since many Muslims recite Al-Kahf on Fridays, make Friday your revision day: recite the part you have memorized from memory and read the rest from the mushaf. As the memorized part grows, the reading part shrinks.
Lessons from the four stories
Scholars often note that the four stories touch on four kinds of trial: faith (the young men of the cave), wealth (the owner of the gardens), knowledge (Musa and the servant of Allah) and power (Dhul-Qarnayn). Keeping these themes in mind while memorizing helps you remember which story comes next, and gives the surah's Friday recitation more meaning.
If you only have time for part of it
If memorizing all 110 verses feels too much right now, start with the first ten verses, then the last ten verses (101–110). Both are short, and the first ten are mentioned in Sahih Muslim 809. You can then fill in the stories over time.
Memorize with a teacher
A long surah needs someone to check accuracy and keep you on schedule. In our Surah Memorization Classes, a teacher listens to each lesson one-on-one on Zoom, corrects Tajweed, and plans revision so earlier sections stay fresh. Weekly tests and a monthly progress report show your progress. Start with a free 3-day trial.
