Noorani Qaida is the primer most children use to learn the Arabic letters and their sounds before reading the Quran. It was written by Sheikh Noor Muhammad Haqqani of Ludhiana, and its step-by-step lessons are used in homes, masjids and online classes across Pakistan, India, the UK, the USA, Canada and Australia. Below you will find free PDF editions from legitimate sources, followed by a short guide to using the book.

Who is it for?

Noorani Qaida suits children from about age 4, and adults who are starting from zero. English editions add English instructions and often transliteration, which helps families where English is the main language at home.

How to use it, lesson by lesson

  1. Single letters: learn each letter's sound from its correct point of articulation (makhraj).
  2. Joined letters: recognise letters at the start, middle and end of words.
  3. Disjointed letters: read combinations such as الم letter by letter.
  4. Harakat and tanween: fathah, kasrah, dammah and double vowels.
  5. Madd, sukun and shaddah: long vowels, silent letters and doubled letters.
  6. Quranic words: practice with words and phrases from the Quran.

Tips for parents

  • Keep lessons short (10–15 minutes) and daily.
  • Move to the next page only when your child reads the current one without help.
  • Start each lesson by revising the previous page.
  • Have a teacher check sounds that do not exist in English, such as ع ح غ خ ص ض ط ظ.
